Margaret Tilden is the owner of the Washington Herald newspaper. Upstart journalist Zoe Barnes caught her attention when she published a story predicting President Walker would appoint Catherine Durant as Secretary of State. Durant was an old friend of Tilden's so she took a particular interest in the story. Zoe earned Margaret's respect when she refused to reveal the source for her story (Frank Underwood) when asked, so she ordered her Chief Editor Tom Hammerschmidt to put the story on the front page. This lead to a contentious relationship between Tom and Zoe, culminating in her quitting after he insulted her during an argument between the two. Tilden forced Hammerschmidt to resign, stating that it wasn't what he called her, it was because he let her walk out the door.
